MJO Invites Koen Nys & Raft

Muzecafé Heusden-Zolder
(BEL)
www.muzejazzorchestra.be/agenda

Raft is a vibraphone trio, but for this special evening they will perform in a quintet composition. With this quintet they play the music of the well-known jazz rock/fusion group 'Steps Ahead', a group that caused a furore in the eighties led by vibraphonist Mike Manieri and with Michael Brecker on saxophone, among others. So you can expect a jazz evening where the melting pot of hard bop and latin music will take you on a true 'eighties' trip.

Jan Nihoul (vibraphone),

Peter van Tichelen (drums),

Koen Toté (double bass),

Koen Nys (saxophone)

Costa Arvanitidis (guitar)

Spine boekvoorstelling

Bibliotheek Heusden-Zolder
(BEL)
www.johanvanstraelen.be/spine

Johan Vanstraelen broke a vertebra in June '22 after a fall from 1 floor high and was therefore forced to rest for a relatively long time. And that just as summer announced itself as the first free summer time after 2 years of mandatory lockdowns.

When the frustration and the most severe pain had subsided somewhat, he started looking for useful, creative and doable activities. It became an initially aimless search in his archive of 25 years of photography. Photos were selected based on feeling, resulting in a beautiful collection of around 400 photos.

After a few inspections and some liquidations, it turned out that in one way or another every photo could be linked to his condition: the broken vertebra. The photo project 'Spine' was born.

A photo book was made, he is now selling it for the benefit of the purchase of new sensory beds for 't Weyerke in Heusden-Zolder, where people who end up less fortunate after a similar fall end up.

The exhibition shows some images from this collection. They make you think about finiteness and evidence.

During the book presentation he tells his story and takes you along in the quest.

In absence

PXL-MAD Hasselt
(BEL)
ontroerd.be/in-absence/

There is a special relationship between mourning and objects. In Absence creates an exchange of ideas between objects and visual art on the one hand and between historical mourning traditions and contemporary imagination on the other.

The expo is a shared space in which nuanced and innovative reflections and discussions can take place about grief and loss. In Absence refers to the seemingly contradictory role that objects can play in a grieving process. Objects can make the absence of a loved one painfully palpable, but they can also evoke that person back.

How can objects, smells or works of art guide people through this process? The common thread throughout the exhibition is therefore how much mourning has to do with design. This is also the reason to organize an exhibition about mourning, objects and art.

In addition to and around the expo, there will be a varied range of activities.

The expo runs from April 20 to May 11, 2023.

MJO Meets KCA Jazz Composers

CC Muze - Heusden-Zolder
(BEL)
www.muzejazzorchestra.be/agenda

MJO vzw also wants to offer young musicians and composers a platform to gain experience in a professional environment. For example, in 2018 MJO invited Lennert Baerts to make a composition for the orchestra. Times Change and So Must We was also recorded and released on CD in 2020.

Lennert is now a permanent employee of MJO and teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. He came up with the idea of setting up a collaboration between MJO and the Antwerp Conservatory (KCA).

During the collaboration, the composition students follow an interactive trajectory of workshops, rehearsals and feedback moments with MJO. The compositions are thereby improved, refined and made playable or ready to play.
